Stretching the Limits:A 3D Method to Map the Elasticity of Composite Materials in Real Time

Summary
Analyzing elastic deformations of composite materials in real-time and in 3D remains a challenge. Shahrouz Amini and his team developed a new method to overcome this hurdle. By combining conventional Raman laser spectroscopic imaging with a nanoindenter that applies controlled deformations. Amini positioned the nanoindenter beneath the material, allowing the laser beam to capture the material's response to the load from above —without interference and with high spatial resolution. This innovative method opens new avenues for designing optimized materials.
